These examples of what is called 'traditional' Chinese furniture are all from or near Shanxi Province in central China and date from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries. Since furniture styles and construction techniques did not change over centuries, it is often difficult to date pieces precisely, and experts tend to use 50 years or so as a basic range. As with American furniture, I am primarily concerned with form, surface, and state of originality when I select Chinese pieces to live with and sell. All of this furniture retains its original lacquered surface, and any repairs are minor and appropriate. All of these pieces were in my own collection - reduced space in my new building leads to their sale. Click on the photos to see larger images. |
